Wellbeing in the Workplace: It’s Not a Perk, It’s a Necessity
In 2024, wellbeing in the workplace isn’t a perk, but a requirement of employers who are invested in well-rounded, high performing teams.
While AI may be creating some efficiencies, there is no replacement for an employer’s most important resource – their people. And research shows that wellbeing goes hand in hand with health and productivity.
Here at The Macro Group, we want to be the best version of ourselves, both professionally and personally. If you’re looking for a bit of inspiration, here are a few things Macro implements to centre wellbeing:
The Wheel of Wellbeing
Our Team have long used The Wheel of Wellbeing – a tool designed to illustrate how balance in our lives leads to wellness. It was even the theme of our last Team Day in Byron Bay. The Wheel encourages our team to seek balance in four key areas: Fun, Family & Friends, Health, and Career & Work. Lack of fulfillment in one area inevitably prevents the wheel from turning – and prevents us from being the best version of ourselves. It’s a reminder and a visual tool that we revisit often to keep ourselves accountable.
Great Place to Work
The Macro Group believe in using concrete data to continually improve our staff’s experience at work. That’s why we have used Great Place to Work for the past three years. As a leading authority on workplace culture, Great Place to Work has been in operation for over 30 years. Their globally recognised Trust Index Survey has been proven to confidentially collect data on the employee experience and provides employers with an accurate report of their employee experience in all the key areas that make a workplace great. We have used this data to implement multiple initiatives based on what matters most to our Team in a confidential and impartial way.
Uprise: Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
We believe an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is essential. Let’s face it, employers are not typically mental and personal wellbeing professionals. Providing access to professionals for personal support during times of hardship via an EAP is one way to responsibly support your team members. Using a third-party service also ensures confidentiality, strengthening trust between employee and employer.
And we do plenty more – from our social activities, which allow our team to connect with each other outside of our daily roles, to the many ways in which we challenge our Team to embody our values, which are the foundation of everything that we do. We are equally as proud of our Team for delivering positive outcomes to our clients, as we are of our Team for seeking ways to find balance and fulfilment outside of the office.
After all, a 2019 journal article, ‘The Value of Worker Well-Being’, published by the NIH National Library of Medicine, found that “Healthy and happy employees have a better quality of life, a lower risk of disease and injury, increased work productivity, and a greater likelihood of contributing to their communities than employees with poorer well-being.”.
That sounds like a win for everyone.
